Abstract:

In this talk, a method for the simulation of freely floating rigid particles in free surface flows is presented. The approach can be seen as a combination of the particulate flow model first presented by Ladd [J.Fl.Mech. 271, 285 (1994)] and the volume-of-fluids based free surface lattice Boltzmann (FSLBM) approach of Koerner et al. [J.Stat.Ph. 121(1/2), 179 (2005)]. The FSLBM allows to neglect the dynamics of the lighter, less viscous phase. The simulation domain thus reduces to the set of liquid nodes, where the hydrodynamics are simulated by a lattice Boltzmann model, and solid (particle) or free surface boundary nodes, respectively. Since both the solid boundaries and the free surface boundary is allowed to move freely, the need for a sophisticated conversion routine arises that handles the state transition of nodes over time [Comput. Math. Appl. 65, 901 (2013)].

The algorithm is well-suited for parallel computation, which will be demonstrated in a number of sample scenarios of liquid-gas-solid flows.
