Abstract:

It is known that the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has a limitation on the mesh structure since the method is only valid in uniform lattices that restrict its application to solve engineering problems. To simulate thermal stratification in a real reservoir we propose to couple a LBM for the Navier-Stokes equations and another for convection-diffusion equation using a three dimensional form of the Taylor series expansion and least squares based lattice Boltzmann method (TLLBM, Shu et al. 2003). This idea was proposed by Gou et al. 2002. The coupled model then solves independently the velocity field and the temperature field and combines them using the Boussinesq approximation. We compared the numerical results with experimental data and results of other model named ELCOM. Acceptable agreement was found between the them.
