Paramaz Avedisian Building of AUA

The 22nd DSFD Conference (2013) will be held in the Paramaz Avedisian Building (PAB) of the American University of Armenia (AUA), located in Yerevan, Armenia. The PAB is a modern building, completed in 2008, with all modern amenities and audiovisual and electronic facilities in various auditoria and classrooms. The building has a beautiful view of Mount Ararat, the biblical resting site of Noah’s ark. The University is located in the heart of Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, which is a dynamic city with a rich cultural and social life and many excellent restaurants and cafés. The campus is within walking distance of a metro station, as well as the Presidential Palace, the Parliament, the Opera House, and the renowned Cafesjian Center for the Arts. It is also easily accessed from a number of modern hotels.

AUA was founded in 1991, in the aftermath of the devastating Spitak earthquake of 1988. The chair of this conference has been the president of AUA since 2010.  AUA is affiliated with the University of California and is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, one of the six accreditation agencies for higher education recognized by the US Department of Education. A brief history of the establishment of the AUA can be found here. Today, AUA offers seven graduate degree programs in Engineering, Business and Management, Law, Political Science and International Affairs, Public Health, and Teaching of English as a Foreign Language.  Undergraduate programs will begin in 2013.

Armenia has a rich history with numerous historical monuments from pre-Christian and early Christian eras.  It is practically like an open-air museum – you can see historical monuments in whichever direction you go in the countryside.  A number of noteworthy museums are located in Yerevan, including the History Museum, the Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, the Erebuni Fortress (Urartian fortress from the 8th Century BC), and the House Museum of Sergey Parajanov, the renowned Soviet-Armenian dissident filmmaker and artist.
